A business plan shows a summary on how a business owner will organize, manage and implement the business activities. Informal business plans can be written in any format, whereas a formal business plan needs to be written in a format according to the standards of the financial institutions, private investors or any other government agency.

Executive Summary: The executive summary in a business plan needs to provide an overview of the documents that comprises of the all the activities needed to start a business. This document is placed first in the finished document but is always written at the last when all the documents have been filed.

Company Description: The company description is a very essential part of a business plan. It should provide an insight on how all the different elements of you new business complements each other. 

Products or Services: The next step involves providing detailed information about your businesses products and services. You must also mention how your products and services differ from that of your competitors. 

Market Analysis: A detailed description about the market, the niche and the demand for your products and services needs to be provided with the right documentation. It must also involve the percentage of market share that you foresee in the near future along with conclusions of any market research data you had conducted.

Sales and Marketing Strategies: This also needs to be mentioned in your business plan. All these strategies are required to promote your business, make your products and services available to the customers. This also helps in determining the promotion and distribution costs and also helps to measure the effectiveness of your methods.

Organization and Management: While writing a plan for your business, the legal structure of your business needs to be provided. Information like whether your business is a sole proprietorship concern or LLC etc needs to put down in the plan. You will also need to provide information about the key players, the responsibilities of your business and how much these all will cost your business.

Financial Data: A business plan is incomplete without any financial data. The financial data of your business should consist of a balance sheet, break even analysis, income statements and of course your cash flow statements. Generally you will need to mention both the historical as well as the future financial statements in your business plan.

Request for Funding: In this section you will be requesting funds from other investors or lenders for your business. If you have sufficient funds to start your business, you can leave this section for the time being. 

Appendix: This is the last section that needs to be in your business plan. An appendix should contain information about resumes, market research findings, estimates and many more. All these documentation are needed to support the body of a business plan.
